Welcome to the Hotel el Mono Feliz!

We have a simple goal: we want our guests to have an extraordinary experience in this amazing part of Costa Rica.

From our accommodations to local adventure, nature, and culinary activities – we will do everything we can to make your stay special.

Enjoy your stay on our site – and at the hotel!

And – please check out (and like¡) our Facebook Page  or you can check availability and rates on this site.

There are two distinctly different room types in our hotel.

The hotel rooms are more traditional and simple in nature. They’re clean and inviting, with newly tiled bathrooms, new linens and towels, and a cozy feel within our main hotel building. Air conditioning is an option available in these rooms.  The updates on these rooms will be complete by June 30th (we are ahead of schedule) – so pictures will be added as they are complete. All bookings for these rooms in the future will be for the renovated rooms. They will have the same linens, towels, art and decor as the bungalows featured below.

The Jungle Bungalows are designed and built with traditional Costa Rica style and technology. They’re built so that they’re quite comfortable even without air conditioning, particularly at night.

There is a huge number of things to do in the area around our hotel. The number of exciting and interesting things to do is so extensive – you might want to extend your stay in Costa Rica!

If you want to explore on your own, there are several incredible beaches within a twenty minute drive. Unlike the high-rise flanked beaches of so many other areas around the world, all you see at our beaches is beaches. It’s all about nature.

And for many visitors, our beaches are the best they’ve ever seen.  We can help you decide which ones you would like to visit. See below, too, for an option to take a guided horseback tour from the hotel to the beach!

About an hour south of us is the town of Sierpe. It’s well known as the gateway to the incomparable Corcovado National Park. This park was named by National Geographic as the third best national park – in the entire world.

Whether you come to Sierpe to spend a day on Caño Island or Corcovado, or to explore the mangroves and natural marine areas closer in, you’re sure to see an exceptional array of wildlife, birds, fish, and even crocodiles (from the safety of your guide boat).

If you’re a licensed diver, there are exceptional areas to explore in the area.  One of the local favorites is Cano Island. On your dive, you could see whales, dolphins, hundreds of fish, even sharks.  If you’re not a licensed diver, we can help you sign up for a “Resort Course” training that gives you the basic safety training needed to enjoy a real SCUBA diving adventure under the watchful and helpful eye of a SCUBA trainer and guide.

If you’re interested in snorkeling, there are several great options to choose from, each with experienced guides and solid boats that are ready to take you to the best spots for seeing the world under the surface of the ocean.

Some of the best class 3 to class 5 whitewater rafting anywhere can be found in this area of Costa Rica. We are connected with local operators who will provide a safe and exciting day on the water.  They also include transportation from their shop to the river (the river you’ll experience depends on several factors, but we can help you decide), a guided tour of the area, a safety briefing and safety equipment, a spectacular mid-river snack (really quite remarkable), and lunch after the rafting trip.  They even provide photos and videos of your experience (bring a thumb drive with you and they’ll make sure you have all the photos right there on the spot!  Don’t have a thumb drive? Ask to borrow one of ours!)

A popular activity in Ojochal is to saddle up on horseback and take a trail ride to the local waterfall, to one of our beaches, or to the mountains.  Our guide is less than 1 kilometer from the hotel and he’s got a fantastic reputation for excellent adventures and scenic experiences on horseback.  If you would like, you can even include lunch in his gardens after coming back from the morning ride.

About 15 minutes away, our favorite Stand Up Paddleboarding and Kayaking provider can help you with equipment and lessons – and can get you in some of the best water in the area for these activities.

Kayaking and SUP in Costa Rica is just a little bit different than in other parts of the world.  You’ll want to check it out.

Whether you’re new to surfing or have been surfing all your life, you can make the most of your time here with an experienced Surf Coach or Surf Camp.

They’re geared toward your experience, skill level, and interest. We can help you get set up for the best sets of your life.

A lot of our guests come to Costa Rica with zip lining in mind.  There is a little bit of speed (or a lot!) and some great adventure every time. You will be immersed in nature – and will probably see some beautiful and interesting wildlife.

Guests have reported seeing sloths, toucans, monkeys, parrots, anteaters, and much more.

There are two premium providers we like to recommend.

One is a little faster and more adventurous than the other, but both offer a safe and exciting way to see the jungle from the tree

This part of Costa Rica is fortunate to be a part of the migratory patterns of several species of whales and dolphins and they can be seen throughout the year.

The tours are by boat and they get you close to the action (but with safety for you and the animals as the number one priority).

Check out this chart for information on whale and turtle migratory patterns throughout the year:

The Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary is a non-profit organization and every person that steps through our doors is helping rescue, feed, give necessary veterinary care, and so much more.

Here you will be able to experience a rich variety of the amazing wildlife Costa Rica has to offer.

They have new habitats for over 75 animals that are cared for by their professional staff and a host of volunteers!

The type and number of animals hosted at the sanctuary is constantly fluctuating and you will discover different animals from month to month. Schedule one of our tours where you and your family will get educated, be entertained and experience up close interaction with some of the most amazing and exotic animals found anywhere in the world.

We’re happy to recommend Costa Rica’s premier off-road tour company. It’s a great way to explore Costa Rica – on your own 4X4 ATV. Here, you’ll ride off the tourist map and into the real Costa Rica.

Situated near unspoiled jungles and beaches of the Southern Zone of Costa Rica, the diversity of landscape ranges from pristine beaches to lush mountain trails, literally minutes apart. The area ranges in altitude from sea level to a quick ride up to 4000’ where the air is cool and crisp.

The adventure begins as soon as you arrive at the shop. After a brief instructional course on vehicle operation, and a fun little test ride, you’ll be on your way to an experience you won’t soon forget.

HIKING – guided or on your own
If you enjoy a hike through the woods and mountains, you’re in the right place. Many people do some research and head off on their own. Some people want the benefit of an experienced who knows the terrain and knows how to help you spot exciting birds, animals, and even unique plants that are sure to capture your interest.

Birding is an adventure that benefits from the skilled eye and experienced ear of a seasoned guide.

Take advantage of their knowledge and see birds you’ve never seen before – all in their natural habitat.

And don’t forget your camera!
