We stayed for 8 nights at “El Mono Feliz” in june 2017 for the wedding of our friends. What a wonderful, wonderful place!
There were 5 of us; our friends (the bride and groom), their 6 year old daughter (our goddaughter) and us. We stayed in two cabanas; very spacious and very comfortable wooden cabins with their own bathroom, shower and kitchenette (and artwork), beautifully located in EL Mono Feliz’ tropical gardens. It was so lovely to fall asleep and wake up to the sound of the stream (that runs at the back of the property) and the many different sorts of birds and other wildlife that reside in the gardens of EL Mono Feliz.
The owners of El Mono Feliz, Todd and Patrick, are simply amazing; extremely hospitable, warm, genuine, very knowledgeable about the area and always there for us when we needed tips, information or get reservations made. Also, they serve a really great breakfast (with as much delicious fresh fruits, amazing bread and/or perfectly cooked eggs as we wanted). Although Todd and Patrick had only taken over El Mono Feliz from the previous owners (Anja and Otto) for about a month before we arrived, they already managed to make lots of changes and improvements (incl. completely retiling the pool area and walkway to the cabanas), making an already wonderful place even more magical.
Ojochal (the village where El Mono Feliz is located) and the surrounding areas are great to (further) discover Costa Rica: there are many great restaurants (some of them with really amazing views), lovely beaches and a choice of many great daytrips you can undertake (hike up to the waterfall, visit the Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary, take a Sierpe mangrove cruise, zip-line in the jungle, go horse riding, (learn to) surf in Dominical, to just name a few).
As far as getting married in Costa Rica is concerned; I do not think our friends could have asked for a more magical wedding day. After a lovely and intimate wedding ceremony on the beach near El Mono Feliz, we returned to El Mono Feliz where the newly weds were surprised (thanks to Patrick and Todd and their staff) with a beautifully decorated cabana; there were beautiful tropical flowers everywhere, it was very fairytale like. The newly weds then had their wedding pictures shot in El Mono Feliz’ tropical gardens (especially the tranquil area near the little stream made a spectacular background for the wedding pictures). All in all it was a perfect day!
We had such a great time at El Mono Feliz that all of us found it hard to say goodbye to Patrick, Todd, their two lovely dogs (esp. Dobby, worlds’ friendliest dog) and their staff after 8 nights. We really hope to be able to go back for a longer stay sometime in the future (maybe for one of the yoga retreats that Patrick and Todd plan to offer) and feel very lucky to have been able to call El Mono Feliz our “home” during our time in CR.
In short; if you are thinking of staying at EL Mono Feliz, do it! El Mono Feliz is everything and more Patrick and Todd promise you on their website and I am sure that you will love it!
PS: a tip for anyone planning to get married whilst staying at EL Mono Feliz; Patrick recommended a great local hairdresser who was a great help in assisting the bride and bridesmaid in creating the hairdo they wanted for the wedding day (you might find that your normal hairstyling products/techniques do not work in CR due to the humidity and heat).
